2. Border Irregularity

Normal moles are usually completely circular, which is why a mole with an irregular, ragged border should raise a red flag. Look closely at your moles with a magnifying glass to see if the edges are smooth and even.

3. Color Variations

Although many people think melanomas are completely black, the growths can be brown, black, tan, or red, or a mix of these colors. Look closely at the mole to see if it has multiple colors mixed throughout the growth.

4. Diameter

Melanomas also typically grow out of control, creating much larger mole-like growths. Anytime a mole is larger than a quarter of an inch or 6 millimeters, it should be inspected by a dermatologist.

5. Evolution

Since they consist of mutated cells that are growing at their own rate, melanomas typically change over time. Your mole might become larger or morph into a different shape or color. To track your mole growth, take a picture with your smartphone and compare it to past shots.
