Funeral services can be emotional and overwhelming, regardless of your relationship with the deceased. Although you can never mentally prepare for this experience, there are some etiquette guidelines to follow. Fred D. Knapp & Son Funeral Home has been Greenwich, CT’s local, family-run funeral home since 1846. Below, the staff offers four tips for handling a service with grace.

4 Funeral Etiquette Tips

1. Don’t Be Disruptive

Be punctual. Even if you have a good excuse, arriving late is disruptive and may be interpreted as a sign of disrespect. Also, silence your cell phone or, better yet, turn it off. Leave small children with a babysitter if you aren't sure they can sit still and quietly. Pack a comfort item or toy and snacks if you have to bring them along. If your baby starts fussing or crying during the service, quietly take them out of the room until they’ve calmed down.

2. Dress Appropriately

funeral-greenwich-CTFuneral attire is generally formal and conservative. Choose dark or subdued colors like black and gray, and dress modestly. For women, a dress cut at or below the knee is a safe bet; for men, a suit and tie is essential. No two funerals are exactly alike, as some families prefer an informal celebration of life. In this case, if they want guests to dress casually, they will specify in the obituary or invitations.

3. Support the Grieving

It’s perfectly acceptable to cry and show emotion. However, remember that as a guest, it’s your job to support those closest to the deceased. Express your sympathy with them in person. You might also bring a bouquet or send a flower arrangement to the family’s home. After the service, reach out to them, and let them know they’re not alone.

4. Follow Staff Cues

Funerals are often steeped in religion and tradition. Generally, respectful observation is all that’s expected of guests. However, you may be asked to participate in prayers or in tossing a handful of soil into the grave. The funeral home staff will guide you through such customs. If you have questions about how to act, don’t be afraid to ask a staff member.
