A Guide to Cabinet Refinishing

What Are the First Steps?

Cabinet RefinishingProper ventilation should be maintained to ensure that fumes evaporate quickly. The cabinet hardware, including the knobs and hinges, will need to be removed from the cabinets. Store them in a plastic bag and remove everything from the cabinets and drawers.

Clean the Doors

A degreasing cleanser will need to be used to remove any dust and grime that has accumulated on the surface or in ridges and corner grooves. Scrub the cabinets thoroughly with a sponge until the areas are completely clean. After rinsing, let cabinets dry for 12 hours.

Repair Holes & Cracks

Any holes and cracks should be filled with carpenter putty that is the same color as the wood.

Sand the Surfaces

An electric sander should be used to sand the doors and drawers. The corners and grooves must be sanded by hand using 100-grit sandpaper. Follow the grain of the wood to preserve its integrity. Some 150- or 180-grit sandpaper should be used to smooth out any rough areas of the top layer of wood. Once the sanding is complete, all traces of debris must be cleaned and removed from the wood.

Apply Paint or Stain

The color or stain of your choice can be applied with a fine bristle brush. A qualified professional can also use a sprayer to coat the surface with paint.

Apply Lacquer

Once the stain or color has dried, you can apply two coats of varnish to protect the finish.
