Learn How Stainless Steel Is Made, Wood, Missouri

From automotive manufacturing to dentistry, stainless steel is used in a wide range of industries. While it was once expensive to produce, the experts at Douglass Steel say the process was revolutionized in the 1970s and evolved into modern-day inexpensive and improved steelmaking. Serving residents throughout Mountain Grove, MO, the premier metal company services and cuts a wide range of metal types, including steel, iron, aluminum, and copper. Below, they explain how stainless steel is made.

The first step in the process is to melt the raw materials, which are iron, chromium, nickel, and other elements, together in an electric arc furnace. For the metal to become molten, the process takes about eight to 12 hours. The excess carbon is then removed by processing the metal in a converter.

steelAfter removing the excess carbon, the next stage is tuning the chemical composition to remove any unwanted elements and improve the consistency. The molten steel is then cast into forms such as rods, tubes, slabs, and blooms.

To form the steel into plates, strips, sheets, or wires, it must go through a rolling process, depending on the desired end product. For example, hot rolling will create bars and plates, while cold rolling produces wide sheets with improved surface finishes. After, the steel is then cut into the desired size.

Before the metal can be sent to a supplier, the surface must be finished by going through a grinding wheel or abrasive belt. This is done to grind or polish the steel and is important for stainless steel products.
