Carbon monoxide is an insidious poison with no color or odor. If not detected in high concentrations, it can be deadly. Fortunately, most carbon monoxide-related incidents are preventable. Action Security & Communications has served the Rochester, NY, area for over 30 years. Below, the knowledgeable team explains four essential tips to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

4 Carbon Monoxide Safety Tips

1. Install Alarms

Carbon monoxide alarms are as important as smoke and fire alarms. Make sure there are alarms on every level of the home, particularly near bedrooms. If there’s a fire or carbon monoxide leak, the alarms will sound off. If this happens, leave the house immediately. To keep the alarms working properly, replace the batteries at least once a year and replace the detectors every 10 years.

2. Know the Dangers

carbon monoxideCarbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless, and poisonous gas. Most fuel-burning mechanisms, including furnaces, fireplaces, generators, and cars produce carbon monoxide. When these machines are properly vented and maintained, it is dispersed efficiently. If not, the gas accumulates, causing health issues if inhaled. At lower concentrations, inhalation results in symptoms like a headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, chest pain, and confusion. At higher levels, it can quickly cause loss of consciousness and even death.

3. Store Gasoline Safely

Only keep small quantities of fuel on hand, and ensure it’s in an approved, child-proof container.  Store it in a locked location in a well-ventilated garage or shed where children can’t access it. Also, keep it away from any sources of heat, including dryers, furnaces, and water heaters. Never attempt to start a fire with gasoline.

4. Maintain Fuel-Burning Devices & Vents

Always rely on experts to install fuel-burning devices in your home and to set up the appropriate venting. Have these devices professionally inspected at least once a year to prevent leaks. Also, make sure nothing is obstructing the outside vent or stack for your stove, furnace, fireplace, or dryer. It’s particularly important to check the vents after a storm and in the winter. Keep the vents clear of snow and ice buildups.
