What Is It Like to Get a Dental Crown?, Texarkana, Arkansas

Dental crowns—or, artificial tooth-like caps fitted on top of natural teeth—are incredibly versatile, offering dentists a reliable way to protect decayed teeth, secure a dental bridge, and offer cosmetic enhancements. But if you have never had a crown placed, it may seem like a foreign concept. To familiarize yourself with the process, browse the following guide.

Guide to Dental Crowns

The First Stage

crownDuring the initial appointment, your dentist will determine which crown type is best for your situation. Most crowns are made from porcelain, metal, or ceramic. Next, the dentist will prepare your tooth by removing decay and filing it down or adding fill for a more secure fit.

Using a mold, your dentist will take an impression of your bite. This mold is then sent to a lab, where they will produce your real crown. While you wait for it to arrive, your dentist will fit you with a temporary one.

The Second Stage

It can take a few weeks for your crown to be custom manufactured. However, if the lab is equipped with a more advanced machine, they can make same-day crowns. When the permanent crown is ready, the temporary version will be removed. Next, the dentist will make sure the crown fits flush with the rest of your teeth. Using a special cement, the specialist will affix the crown to the prepared tooth.

Caring for Your Crown

In general, most patients can expect their crowns to last around seven years. However, it’s still important to take good care of them. In addition to regular brushing and flossing, avoid hard foods that could crack your crown’s surface. You should also talk to your dentist about the best way to care for your dental crown.
