When your dentist gives you fillings, you hope they will last a lifetime. Today’s filling compounds are durable, but not indestructible, even when applied by the best dentist. If your dentist notices your fillings are in bad condition, they may recommend having them replaced.

Why You May Need New Fillings

1. Discoloration

Over time, white fillings may change color, particularly with older compounds. Your dentist might also notice staining around the edges, which can sometimes be fixed by smoothing them. If, however, you want your fillings to look pristine, a replacement may be needed.

2. Decay

The area around your filling is not impervious to tooth decay. After your dentist fills your cavity, it is vital that you take good care of your teeth to avoid further damage. When decay occurs around or under a filling, the damage can spread quickly, and a replacement should be made as soon as possible.

3. Leaks

fillingsSometimes, a gap will occur between the filling and the tooth. This is normal for amalgam fillings in the first few weeks because it takes time for the material to fully expand to fill the space. If, however, you have a leaky filling after this time has passed, your dentist will need to fix it to prevent liquids and small food particles from getting in. A replacement is not always necessary, but it depends on the extent of the leak.

4. Damage

Sports injuries, normal chewing, teeth grinding, or biting something solid, like ice, can damage the integrity of your fillings. If you think your filling has become chipped or cracked, visit your dentist to assess the damage and have it repaired or replaced. Damaged fillings can quickly become leaky, decaying ones.
