Acupuncture FAQs: The Essential Information You Need to Know, Manhattan, New York

Once viewed as an “alternative” healing method, acupuncture is now being embraced by mainstream medicine as doctors recognize its many benefits. Originating from traditional Chinese medicine, modern acupuncture can address a range of ills, from migraines to back pain. Some patients are hesitant to try it, however, largely due to a lack of information. Read on for answers to some of the most common queries regarding acupuncture.

FAQs: All About Acupuncture

1. How Is Acupuncture Done?

Acupuncture involves inserting very fine needles into specific parts of the body according to a physical “map” that has been honed over thousands of years of practice. Your acupuncturist will choose these acu-points based on your complaints. This encourages natural healing and improved immune function.

2. Does It Cause Pain or Pose Safety Issues?

No. A licensed acupuncturist will have the training and experience to perform the procedure safely. Only sterile, disposable needles are used. These are very thin and fine, almost like a strand of hair. Most patients experience no discomfort and even find the process quite relaxing.

3. What Conditions Can It Treat?

acupunctureAcupuncture can be used to address a variety of health issues, including muscle spasms, back and neck pain, sciatica, joint disorders, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and menopause symptoms. It can also help with mental disorders, such as stress, anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

4. What Is a Session Like?

Your acupuncturist will likely have you lying on a comfortable, padded table. As they insert the needles, you may feel a sensation resembling a slight pinch. This can be followed by tingling or numbness. Most treatments run 30 minutes to an hour. Multiple sessions are usually needed for lasting results.

5. How Can You Prepare?

You will first have a consultation to discuss your symptoms and medical history. If you have any questions, this is the time to ask! On the day of the procedure, wear loose, comfortable clothing. Avoid eating large meals right before or after. Afterwards, don’t exercise or consume alcohol for at least six hours.
