Bare patches. Thinning turf. If your lawn has suffered from these issues recently, you may be dealing with a grub infestation. Grubs are the C-shaped larvae of chafers, Japanese beetles, and June beetles among other insects, and consume plant and grass roots. If you have dug up brown patches recently and identified grubs as the problem, a comprehensive fertilization program that includes the use of specific insecticides is what you need.

Learn how and when to treat your lawn for grubs:

Curative Applications

Realizing your lawn is infested with grubs calls for curative efforts, such as insecticides featuring carbaryl and trichlorfon compounds. These chemicals are best applied in September or late October and kill grubs regardless of their life stage. Avoid using products that contain any of the following chemicals: lambda-cyhalothrin, cyfluthrin, gamma-cyhalothrin, deltamethrin, bifenthrin, or permethrin. None of these chemicals reach far enough into the soil to be effective. Use ½ inch of water on your lawn immediately following the curative application to get the results you want.

Preventative Applications

fertilizationPreventative insecticide application is the best way to keep grubs from chewing up your lawn. Apply products containing imidacloprid, chlorantraniliprole, thiamethoxam, or clothianidin in June or July to eradicate newly-hatched grubs. Keep in mind that preventative products will not work on larger grubs present in lawns from September through May. However, you will kill most (if not all) of the grubs with these insecticides when you add ½ to 1 inch of water following the application.

The Importance of Fertilization

Fertilization helps your lawn heal from grub damage. Determine the best time to apply fertilizer with your local lawn care service to ensure you will not burn your lawn or interfere with insecticides. It is generally best to fertilize your lawn during active seasons to avoid promoting weed growth.
