Independence Day is one of the most exciting days of the year for most Americans. After spending much of the morning and afternoon swimming, barbecuing, and socializing with friends and family, it is time to enjoy the fireworks. But, while you may be thrilled by the sight of the bright, sparkling display, your pets may not be quite as excited.

Many dogs and cats are frightened by the noise and commotion surrounding fireworks and can have a difficult time with this day. Continue reading below as staff from Perry Animal Hospital in Georgia lists their pet care tips for 4th of July:

1. Make Sure Your Pets are Properly Tagged

The most important pet care measure you can take is ensuring your pet can make it back home. Often, dogs or cats become afraid of the noise and commotion and can run away. Having an appropriate tag, which includes your address and contact information, will help your pet to be found and brought back home in the event of an emergency.

2. Keep Them Hydrated During the Day

The summer heat can be too much for your furry family members. Make sure they stay cool by keeping them out of the sun and providing them with plenty of cold water. If the weather is especially hot, place a few ice cubes in their water bowl to help keep it cool.

3. Create a Safe Indoor Space During Fireworks

While fireworks are going on, create a snug area inside of your home where your pet can stay comfortable and safe. Provide them with blankets, a favorite toy, or have a close family member keep them company until the display is over.

4. Do Not Allow Them to Go Near Sources of Heat

Keep your pet away from any source of heat and fire; this includes sparklers, fireworks, grills, and bonfires. If a pet comes too close to any of these, they may accidentally get burnt or severely injured. Stay safe and help your pet to keep their distance.

5. Clear Your Yard of Debris After the Party

Later in the evening or early the next morning, scan your yard and lawn for any debris. Broken bits of fireworks, trash, or plastic utensils may attract your pet’s eye. If they eat any of these, it can negatively impact their health so it is best to prevent this from occurring.
