Have you ever dreamed of stretching out in a hammock and relaxing while your landscaping robot works in your yard? That dream might be more realistic than you think. The inventor of Roomba®, a robotic vacuum, has developed a prototype device to eliminate weeds.

How the Landscaping Robot Works

Landscaping Charlotte NCCreated by Franklin Robotics and Roomba inventor Joe Jones, the 2½-pound robot, called the Tertill®, travels around a garden and trims weeds. It uses a sensor to determine the size and length of the plants it brushes against, and the smaller ones are considered weeds.

Although cutting weeds won’t kill them immediately, the Tertill can chop them on a daily basis, causing them to lose energy to regenerate and eventually die. As for small plants that resemble weeds, Franklin Robotics has metal bands you can put around them to repel the Tertill.

What Makes the Tertill Stand Out

Aside from being the world’s first landscaping robot, the Tertill has other important features. It’s a solar-powered device that’s inexpensive to run, and it can tend a garden of approximately 100 square feet. Although it requires a small barrier to ensure it won’t run away, its diagonally slanted wheels and sleek design allow it to navigate slopes, mounds of dirt, and sand easily. If you’re interested in purchasing one of these landscaping robots, you will have to wait — the Tertill is still in the fundraising phase.
