A dentist recommending chocolate?  Yes, that’s right, you read correctly.  And just in time –National Chocolate Day is July 7th.

Most of us consume more chocolate than we care to admit.  We know it’s bad for our figures, but it’s not necessarily bad for our teeth.

We all know that eating chocolate releases endorphins that make us feel good. It even increases blood flow and brain function.  But what does it do for our teeth?

Research shows that eating chocolate helps to fight cavities, plaque and tooth decay.

Tooth decay happens when the bacteria in your mouth turn the sugars you eat in to acids.  These acids eat away at the tooth structure and cause tooth decay.  The compound found in chocolate (CPH), has a chemical makeup that is similar to caffeine, helps harden tooth structure and keeps those who indulge less susceptible to tooth decay.  CPH in the cocoa husk has an antibacterial effect that also helps fight tooth decay. This makes chocolate less harmful than the other sweets Dr Joy Lunan warns you away from because the antibacterial agents in the cocoa beans offset its higher sugar levels. Researchers are even predicting that one day, CPH may be used in mouthwashes and toothpastes. Until then, eating 3-4 ounces of chocolate per day is a great way to take advantage of this wonder compound.

For the best effect, it’s best to chew on cocoa nibs but many will find this unsavory as they are very bitter.  The next best option is dark chocolate with only 6 to 8 grams of sugar per serving. Milk chocolate however, in higher in sugar content at 15 grams, which over time can lead to tooth decay. Raw chocolate is an even better option because it is less processed leaving the antioxidants more intact.  Just remember that chocolate is a high-calorie food, so modify your intake accordingly.

So go ahead and celebrate National Chocolate Day this year by indulging in that dark, rich chocolate that makes us all go tingly inside. While research shows chocolate may benefit oral health, daily brushing and flossing and routine dental visits with Dr. Joy Lunan are the true key to prevent tooth decay.
