Sliding doors are not only attractive but also extremely easy to operate. There’s never a need to worry about squeaky hinges—they simply glide on independent tracks and provide easy in and out access. Proper maintenance will ensure they remain in excellent condition.

Here are three ways to uphold the functionality and appearance of your doors:

  • sliding doorsClean the Sills: Foot traffic can quickly spread dirt over the sills below the doors. Instead of allowing it to collect, simply run a vacuum’s hose attachment over the space regularly. Once a week or so is optimal for regular use.
  • Keep It Smooth: What if those sliding doors suddenly seem sluggish? The track likely needs moisture. A professional will smooth a lubricating product formulated with Teflon™ onto the tracks.
  • Use Safe Cleansers: If your door’s frame is made of vinyl, use a gentle dishwashing soap mixed with warm water, as it won’t damage the material. Then, rinse off any residue. If you have wooden or painted door frames, use warm water primarily with just a touch of dishwashing soap.
  • Check Wood for Issues: If you do have a wood frame, it’s important to have a professional inspect it every year. They’ll look for signs of insects or deterioration. These types of issues can spread rapidly, so if they’re discovered it’s crucial to address them right away.
  • Wipe Down Glass: For glass, use a cleaning product meant for this surface, such as Windex®. As you buff the inside and outside of the door, be sure to avoid making contact with the frames—chemicals can damage certain materials.
