According to Naugatuck, CT, dentist Brian Perelmuter, DMDpatients are often anxious when they learn that they’ll need a root canal to treat a dental infection. However, he reassures that the treatment is relatively easy for patients, and is no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. He notes that getting a root canal as soon as possible is a good thing, as it helps relieve the pain of the infected nerves.

If you’re unsure of what to expect during a root canal, Perelmuter describes the basic steps of this common dental procedure.

Preparing for the Root Canal

root canalYour dentist will inject a local anesthesia into the tissue surrounding the tooth. After a few minutes, the area will feel completely numb, so that you won’t experience pain during the procedure. Next, your dentist will place a dental dam around the tooth to protect the treatment area.

Accessing the Infection

Root canal treatments remove infected tissue from the tooth’s pulp, which is inside the surface of the tooth. Your dentist will have to drill through the infected tooth to access the infected pulp and root canal. This is done by making a small entry point through the top or back of the tooth.

Removing Tissue

Once the tooth is properly drilled, the dentist will carefully remove all the infected and dead tissue that is responsible for nerve pain.

Cleaning and Sealing the Canal

To ensure that the area is free of infection-causing bacteria, the dentist will disinfect the tooth’s interior. Next, he or she will use a sealing substance to help the root canal remain intact and restore full functionality. A temporary filling will then be placed in the entry point.

Recovering from the Root Canal

As the anesthesia wears off after the procedure, you may experience mild pain that can usually be managed with over-the-counter medications. You may also be prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection as you heal. Depending on the specifics of your root canal, your dentist may give you specific care instructions to help minimize discomfort and promote healing. Once you have healed, you may return to receive a full filling or dental crown to cover the entry point.

If you are experiencing dental pain or believe you may need a root canal, the best thing to do is to see a dentist as soon as possible for a full examination.
