When the warm summer days finally arrive, there are few things more enjoyable than going out for a long drive with the windows down or taking a road trip with friends and family. Unfortunately, the same hot weather which makes your drives so enjoyable can mean trouble for your vehicle.

Each summer, we at Fort Mitchell Garage in Covington, KY, see many drivers coming in for heat-related auto repairs. However, many of these problems can be avoided with careful driving and routine maintenance. Below, our staff lists some of the most common car issues you may face during the summer, and how to avoid them.

1. Flat Tires

High temperatures are the enemy for your tires. Driving over hot pavement can cause them to warp and flatten out. Additionally, over-inflated tires can expand even further due to the heat, resulting in pops and tears.

Auto RepairTo avoid damaging your tires, routinely check the pressure in each one. If you notice a tire losing pressure or any holes, visit a mechanic to either have the holes patched or purchase a replacement tire.

2. Overheating

An overheated engine is another concern during the summer. When this occurs, the car can stall, leaving you stranded in the middle of a hot day. You can prevent overheating and avoid expensive auto repairs by making sure there is enough coolant or antifreeze in the car’s reservoir at all times.

In addition to the engine, your vehicle’s interior may overheat as well. Parking in direct sunlight can discolor the dashboard and make leather or vinyl seats too hot to sit in. Protect your vehicle and yourself by parking in the shade. If this is not usually an option, consider purchasing a vinyl windshield cover to protect the interior from overheating.

3. Dead Battery

Extremely hot temperatures can cause the fluid in your battery to evaporate, damaging the internal components. This can ultimately result in a dead battery, leaving you stranded. You can prevent this from occurring by visiting a body shop for engine maintenance. During the maintenance, the fluid levels in your battery will be checked and recharged.
