Pregnancy is a special and important time in a woman’s life. If you recently found out you are expecting, congratulations! As you begin to plan for your new baby, there are a few things your OBGYN recommends you do first. Start your pregnancy on the right track and get the care you deserve by following the list below.

4 OBGYN Recommendations for Newly Pregnant Women

1. Visit Your Physician

Visit your primary care physician or women’s health doctor to confirm you are pregnant. This can be completed through a quick and simple urine test. Once it is determined you are pregnant, you can calculate how far along you are, as well as decide if a referral to an OBGYN is needed.

2. Choose a Women’s Health Center

Honolulu OBGYNIf you do not already have a gynecologist who provides obstetric and delivery services, it is time to choose a women’s health center for your prenatal care. Ask your primary care doctor, family, and friends for recommendations. It is important to choose a specialist you are comfortable with. This physician will provide you with care throughout your pregnancy and deliver your baby.

3. Decide When to Tell Family/Friends

While learning you are pregnant is exciting, decide who you will tell now and who can wait. Since the risk of a miscarriage is higher in the first trimester, some women choose to tell immediate family members and wait to tell friends, their boss, and coworkers after the first few months pass. Remember: There is no right or wrong way to announce your pregnancy to those you care about. Consult with your OBGYN, partner, or another loved one to determine what the best strategy is for you.

4. Prepare for the Future

Your first trimester is a time of planning and preparation. During this phase, you will work with your OBGYN to learn more about what to expect from your pregnancy and delivery, brainstorm baby names, and consider finances. From employment to nutrition to announcing the baby’s sex, there is much to think about. Enjoy the process, and ask your women’s health provider if you have any questions.
