Summer break is the highpoint of the year for most kids — nice weather, long days, and freedom from academic drudgery. But for divorced parents, sharing custody over the summer and arranging schedules to suit everyone’s needs is a challenge. To help separated parents make the most of their summer vacation, divorce lawyer Jeannine M. Talbot, shares a few summer vacation tips for separated parents.

A Divorce Lawyer’s Summer Vacation Tips for Separated Parents

1. Plan Well in Advance

divorce-lawyerAny child custody situation demands planning, but given the openness of kids' summer schedules, it’s important for exes to begin communicating as early as possible. Start the process at least a month in advance and consult with your children about how they'd like to spend their summer. Getting everyone on the same page can be a daunting task, but with a little foresight and open dialogue, you can cater to both your and your kids’ needs.

2. Flexibility Is Essential

Resist the temptation to get caught up in power struggles and control issues with your ex. You want to be as flexible as possible and make your kids’ vacation time a priority. For instance, if your child is excited about attending summer camp, but the camp is located nearer to your ex, adjust your schedule and your expectations. It’s not always about who gets more time with the kids, but doing what’s best for them.

3. Be Excited for Your Kids

Maybe your ex is planning a major summer trip for him or herself and the children, or installed a new pool that the kids can't wait to make use of. In situations like these, show your loved ones you're excited for them. By demonstrating your happiness, you relay to them that their relationship with their other parent is important to you. Avoid making your kids feel guilty or that they’re choosing sides.
