A tooth extraction is when a dentist or oral surgeon removes a tooth for one of many possible reasons. Sometimes it’s done to create space for other teeth to grow or because one has suffered too much decay to be saved through other means. Though this is a common procedure, a patient requires some knowledge to ensure their comfort and a smooth recovery.

Tooth Extractions: What You Should Know

Surgery Preparation

Before the procedure begins, your dentist will take an X-ray of your mouth to identify the best way to approach the extraction. After determining the ideal means for removal, you’ll be given an anesthetic to dull the pain.

What to Expect During Surgery

tooth extractionThere are two main methods of tooth extraction, both dependent on the location and health of the tooth. The first is a rather simple procedure that involves the dentist loosening the tooth with one instrument, and then pulling it out with another. This can be done for the majority of extractions as long as the tooth is visible and fully grown.

The second method is for teeth that haven’t come in completely or are broken off near the gums. In this case, an oral surgeon makes a small incision in the gums to make the extraction easier. On other occasions, the tooth may even need to be split in half before removal.

Recovery

After cleaning up and leaving the dentist, your recovery will mainly be dependent on rest and informed decisions. To prevent dry socket, you should avoid smoking or engaging in physical activity for at least three days. You’ll also need to ensure you’re eating soft food and chewing carefully over the extraction site to avoid any unnecessary pain.
