A garbage disposal is one of the most convenient tools you can have in your kitchen. It allows you to quickly and efficiently get rid of food scraps and other debris as you cook and wash the dishes. Because your garbage disposal is connected to your plumbing system, you have to be careful what you put into it.

To avoid the need for plumbing repair, here’s a list of the items you should never put in your garbage disposal:

  1. Pasta: Pasta expands in water, even after it has already been cooked. Putting spaghetti, ziti, and other noodles down your garbage disposal will expose them to water, causing the pasta to swell and clog your pipes. To avoid plumbing repairs, toss old pasta and rice in your trash can.
  2. Bones: Hard bones from chicken and other meat are most likely too strong for the blades in your garbage disposal. If you do toss these into your disposal, they will likely spin around before getting stuck in the drain or clogging your pipes. To avoid needing expensive plumbing repair, throw these away along with your regular trash.
  3. Oil: Oil should never be poured down the drain or into the garbage disposal. This fluid is too thick and can cause clogs and affect the quality of your water. To keep your pipes running smoothly, dump used cooking oil into a container and dispose of it separately.
  4. Fruit Pits: Large fruit pits such as those found in avocados, plums, or apricots are too rough to be cut with a knife. As you can imagine, the blades in your garbage disposal are also not sharp enough to cut through, and they’ll only get stuck in the drain. Get rid of your fruit pits in the regular trash to avoid clogging your plumbing system.
  5. Coffee Grounds: Although coffee grounds are small and can easily slide down your drain, they are one of the worst food remains to put into your garbage disposal. Once mixed with the water in your pipes, the grounds can produce a thick sludge which is difficult to clean. Save yourself the trouble and get rid of them in the trash.
