Remember when we were kids and our parents were always telling us to, “Go outside and play!”  Guess what, they were making our teeth healthier! Yes, that’s true! We thought they were just getting us out of their hair, but really it was very healthy council for kids.

Hi! I’m Dr Teresa Wade and I am a dentist. I’m writing this article for you readers and Cain who wanted me to teach him something fun about his teeth on this web site. I love kids and I love for them to have healthy teeth and inquisitive minds. Cain is so smart so I want to teach him about the sun and his teeth. Come along with us on this journey.

You see, researchers at McMaster University provided new evidence that supports your parents were right when they told you to, “Go out and play!” In 2016, the researchers published the results of their investigations which demonstrated that sunshine is vital for healthy tooth development.

The researchers discovered that Vitamin D, which is so vital to prevent diseases such as Rickets and Osteoporosis, is also critical for the dentin portion of the tooth. This dentin is the tooth’s middle portion and if functions to lay down Secondary Dentin to prevent the tooth’s sensitivity, or toothache in response to very large pulp horns (nerve top corners), fractures in the tooth, or cavities. This insulating and protective property following tooth calcification leaves microscopic markers that scientists can read like rings of a tree.

What sunshine provides is a continued health to the tooth’s dentin. In the absence of sunshine, and therefore Vitamin D, the dentin does not properly mineralize.

So drink your milk, play outside in the sun, and eat a healthy diet is the order of the day.
