Getting your pool ready for the summer takes a bit more than simply peeling back the cover and jumping in. Maintenance for an above-ground pool is largely similar to that of an in-ground pool, and there are a number of things you should do before anyone starts swimming. From skimmers to filters to chemicals, All-American Pools in Cincinnati provides everything you need to get your above-ground pool summer-ready.

above ground poolThe first thing you’ll want to do is clean up the pool. Clean the filter and put the filtration system together, empty out the baskets, and remove any plugs you put in last year. Don’t peel the cover off just yet—you’ll want to keep it on while you’re working on the water quality.

If the water level fell over the winter, top it off. Before you add any chemicals, you should have the water professionally tested. Any swimming pool store like All-American Pools will test pool water: Just take a sample with you to the store. They will be able to recommend the right combination of chemicals to treat the water and make it safe for swimming.

Once you add the appropriate chemicals, you’re almost ready. But don’t dive in yet! The filtration system must be cleaned every day until the water turns clear, which will take about a week. Only when you can see the pool floor should you take the cover off. If you remove the cover too soon, you’ll just end up with more dead leaves, pollen, and other debris to clear out.

Once the water is safe and clear, it’s time to brush the sides, skim out leaves and twigs, and vacuum out the debris. Now your pool is safe for swimming.

To keep your pool swim-ready all summer long, clean the filters regularly, vacuum each week, and test the water chemicals every day.
