In time, even the strongest, smoothest concrete or asphalt driveway will need to be replaced. The sun’s radiation, water seeping into the subsurface layers, and being driven over with a car multiple times a day will eventually take their toll.

Beausoleil & Sons, Rhode Island’s most trusted paving contractor, offers these simple tips for extending the life of your driveway.

  • Keep grass from growing too close to the edges of your driveway, and prevent it from growing up in cracks with regular cleaning. The small roots retain water, which can expand small cracks into big damage later on.
  • Standing water is your driveway’s biggest enemy. The water will eventually trickle down to the subsurface, where it will begin to erode the driveway from the bottom up. Once that foundation layer has been damaged, the only solution is to replace the driveway. Watch to make sure water does not pool at the end of the driveway, either. This is the most common source of trouble.
  • Get your driveway resealed at the first sign of trouble. Many problems in the asphalt will give off plenty of warning signs, usually indicated by light-colored or rough spots on the surface, which can be caused by either water or the sun. Regular resealing and maintenance can make your driveway last 20 to 30 years.
