Dogs are at a risk of heatstroke during the hot summer months. If you suspect it for your dog, going to a pet hospital to see a veterinarian isn't always necessary, but it is important that you provide immediate care.

Because dogs have fur, it's easier for their bodies to overheat when in the sun for long periods of time. The only sweat glands they have are on their paws, which make it tough for them to self-cool. Luckily, the symptoms of heatstroke are easy to spot.

Identifying Heat Stroke

Some of the easiest symptoms of heatstroke to spot are panting and excessive drooling. You should also be aware of your dog's temperature when outside in the sun and can do so by running your hands over their body. Veterinarians also say you can tell if your dog's dehydrated if they're drinking a lot of water but not relieving themselves.

Treating Heatstroke

veterinariaIf you notice the above symptoms in your dog, it's time to act fast and start giving them treatment. Give them water, and get them out of the sun in a place with air conditioning, so they can begin to cool down. At this point, you should either apply a cold pack to their head or put them in a cool shower.

If you're not at home or can’t get them into the shower, gently spraying them down with water from a hose is another option. Massaging their legs is necessary to get their blood flowing and help reduce their temperature. Lastly, to ensure no long-term damage, you might want to bring your dog to a veterinary hospital to get a professional's diagnosis.
