Even the smallest ding on a car windshield is enough to warrant a visit to an auto glass repair shop. Not only is it illegal in some states to drive with a cracked windshield, but it could be dangerous as well. If you notice a crack in your windshield, head to an auto glass repair shop and refrain from doing certain activities that could make matters worse.

Here are five things you should avoid doing if your windshield is cracked:

  • auto glass repair Go to a Car Wash: The combination of water and pressure inside of a car wash can cause a small crack to spread throughout the rest of the windshield. If you absolutely must clean your car before getting the windshield replaced, wash it by hand, and don’t spray water onto the cracked area.
  • Blast the Defroster: Even if it’s cold, resist blasting the defroster as soon as you get into the car if you have a cracked windshield. The change in temperature could cause the crack to grow. Instead, try running the car for five to ten minutes to gradually warm it up before touching the defrost button.
  • Use Windshield Wipers: Moving windshield wipers don’t put an enormous amount of pressure on the glass surface, but they can be problematic if there is a crack in the windshield. It’s also dangerous not to use them while driving in the rain, so it’s better to avoid driving in the rain with a cracked windshield.
  • Play Loud Music: Loud music and a strong stereo system make cars vibrate, and this vibration is another factor that can cause a crack to grow on a windshield.
  • Continue to Drive: The worst thing you can do with a cracked windshield is to continue driving. Drivers should immediately head to an auto glass repair shop to correct the damage before the crack gets worse.
