Losing a loved one—whether a parent, grandparent, spouse, friend, or even a pet—is never easy. Grieving this loss is perfectly normal, and can be a healthy process. You’ll experience a range of emotions within a short period, including shock, anger, loneliness, and sadness. While these are expected, knowing how to manage your grief can safeguard you from more serious conditions like depression.

How to Grieve In a Healthy Way

While everyone grieves differently, there are still some basic tips everyone can use during a difficult time. You may need some or all of these hints to help you wade through this trying time:

  • Talk to Someone: For some, simply talking about their grief with a friend, particularly one who knew well the deceased, can help. Others may need assistance from someone with more expertise, like a licensed bereavement counselor. Some funeral home directors are licensed counselors who can guide you through both the difficult process of making funeral arrangements as well as your grieving.Support Group for Grieving
  • Find a Support Group: There are a lot of support groups for people who have lost their loved ones to cancer, suicide, and other serious illnesses. These groups offer support for the surviving family members and friends trying to make sense of their loss and handle their grief.
  • Watch For Signs Of Depression: Unfortunately, grieving can easily slide into clinical depression. Typically, grief may include feelings of guilt and preoccupation. If thoughts or feelings turn demoralizing, humiliating, or suicidal, that signals depression, and it’s important to get help.
  • Try Writing: Many people find writing therapeutic. You don’t have to be good at it. Simply journaling your daily thoughts surrounding your loved one and your grief can help you through this difficult time.

Maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep are also critical to moving through the grieving process healthily. If you find yourself too fatigued to exercise but have trouble sleeping at night, you should talk with your doctor.
