Carpenter ants and termites have several things in common. Both are about the same size, swarm in the springtime for mating reasons, and inflict serious damage on wood structures. Help yourself make the right pest control decision by learning a little about the differences between the two insects. Treatment for each varies and is key in preventing their return.

How Carpenter Ants & Termites Are Different

Wings

Termite wings are about the same size and paddle-shaped, while breaking off easily. Carpenter ants have larger wings in the front than the back and black dots on the tops of their front wings. Their wings rarely break off and have a pointed appearance.

Body

carpenter antsCarpenter ant bodies feature the pinched waists that many ants are known for, while termite bodies are completely straight with broad waists. Carpenter ants also have three distinct body segments, compared to termites’ two.

Color

Carpenter ants come in a variety of colors, including orange, brown, red, black, red and black, and yellow, and termites are usually brown or off-white.

Wood Activity

Unlike termites, carpenter ants dig through wood to create nests. Termites consume wood to make their nests, including solid wood in excellent condition. Carpenter ants are fond of only rotting or wet wood.

Treatment

Termite extermination involves locating mud tubes, which the insects use to seal nest entrances, and placing bait around them. Carpenter ant treatment requires finding the actual nests and using the proper insecticides.
