If you are thinking of updating your HVAC system, be sure to take size into account. For residential systems, the right size depends on several variables, such as square footage, ductwork, and sunlight. To ensure energy efficiency, do your homework before making your purchase.

Here are some tips on how to leave the guesswork out of your purchase:

  • HVACHeating & Cooling Capacity: The capacity value is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units) per hour. You can consult the Energy Star® website for guidelines on BTUs per square footage. As an example, a 2,400 square foot home will need an HVAC capacity of 34,000 BTUs. When in doubt, leave it to your HVAC tech to measure the square footage of your home.
  • Draft & Sunlight: If your home is drafty or you’re installing a unit in a particularly sunny room, the size of your HVAC system should account for that. An under or oversized unit will strain to effectively moderate the temperature, frequently cycling on and off and wearing out faster.
  • Retrofitting: Sometimes, retrofitting your current system is the simplest and most cost-effective option. This is especially true if you are building an addition to your home and your current system’s capacity is enough to heat and cool the new space.
