Recycling is a huge part of keeping the planet healthy, and most cities have thankfully seen a rise in recycling participation. However, there are still misconceptions over which common items can and cannot be recycled. Byer Steel has been a trusted recycling center in Cincinnati, OH, since 1937 and wants to help you understand how to properly dispose of a few common items.

5 Items Your Local Recycling Center Won’t Accept

1. Plastic Bags & Caps

With the word plastic in the name, it’s easy to see why many people think plastic grocery bags and bottle caps can be recycled. However, these items can cause issues for a recycling center and its equipment. Instead, use your local grocery store’s collection bin for plastic bags and be sure to leave all lids attached to milk jugs and other bottles.

2. Styrofoam & Other Takeout Containers

It’s a common misconception that styrofoam can be recycled. However, none of it can, so limit your use of it to reduce waste. Further, food containers, such as pizza boxes, cannot be recycled due to the lingering food particles and grease residue.

3. Lightbulbs

Many Americans assume that lightbulbs can be recycled with other glass products, but that’s partially inaccurate. While newer bulbs are made of different types of glass that may be accepted, older bulbs cannot be recycled whatsoever.

4. Certain Appliances & Electronics

For example, microwaves and laptops should never be thrown into a recycling bin. Instead, these products should be taken to specialized facilities where all recyclable metal and other scrap materials can be salvaged for re-use.

5. Particular Paper Products

Certain paper products, such as paper towels and wrapping paper, cannot be recycled. To cut down on use, consider washable cloths in lieu of paper towels or recyclable gift bags instead of wrapping paper.

Recycling helps the environment when done correctly. Byer Steel wants to do their part by educating the public and continuing to produce high-quality rebar using 100% recycled materials.
