Teething is a difficult process for parents and children alike. Erupting smiles are uncomfortable, and there's not much you or your child's pediatric dentist can do to change that. However, there are several ways you can help relieve your child's pain and make the experience easier. The pediatric dentists of Wisconsin’s La Crosse Pediatric Dentistry LLC recommend these five dental care techniques to make your child more comfortable while teething.

Teething Tips

1. Use Teething Toys

Chewing on firm objects will help your child's teeth work their way through the gums. For safety, choose teething toys that don't contain liquid—water-filled toys can rupture.

2. Provide Cold Water

A cold bottle can be soothing on the gums, but you don't want your child to be constantly sipping on milk or juice, as the sugar is bad for oral hygiene. Instead, fill your little one’s bottle with cool water.

3. Freeze Some Snacks

Not only are fruits and veggies good for your child, but they can also help with teething. Freeze a peeled cucumber, sliced mango, or another large piece of a soft fruit or vegetable, and give it to your child to chew on. Make sure to monitor them in case they break any pieces off, as these are a choking hazard.

4. Rub Their Gums

5. Use Infant Medications

Over-the-counter pain relievers can work wonders on a teething tot, relieving pain and inflammation. However, it's best to check in with their doctor or pediatric dentist before using any medication.

While teething can be an ordeal, it doesn't have to be. Help your child through the experience with these teething tips, or call La Crosse Pediatric Dentistry LLC for more advice. You can reach them at (608) 782-4054 or online.
