You’ve got the hang of some healthy oral hygiene practices—but can you identify which habits are detrimental to your smile? Below, Cincinnati dentist Dr. Robert Petrtyl shares a few bad habits you should quit sooner rather than later.

Habits to Avoid According to Your Dentist

Brushing Too Hard

dentistIf brushing your teeth is good for them, then brushing harder is better, right? Unfortunately, this misconception is fairly widespread, and it can cause serious damage to your mouth over time. Brushing too vigorously can irritate your gum tissue and damage the tooth’s enamel, making your teeth vulnerable to decay.

Look for a toothbrush with soft bristles, and only apply gentle pressure when you brush. If you’re still concerned that you’re doing it too hard, ask your dentist for a proper demonstration at your next appointment.

Using Your Teeth As Tools

Your teeth may be strong enough to break down food, but you should not use them for any other purpose. When you open packages or remove tags from your clothing with your teeth, you run the risk of chipping, cracking, or otherwise damaging them. Avoid using your teeth as tools, and stick to scissors instead.

Failing to Replace Your Toothbrush

While your dentist will give you a new toothbrush at every appointment, you shouldn’t be relying on this to maintain proper care. Toothbrushes should be replaced more frequently than your occasional teeth cleaning appointment, otherwise, the bristles will disintegrate, and they will no longer be effective at removing plaque. In general, you should swap out for a new toothbrush every three to four months, as well as after every major illness because the bacteria can dwell there and inhibit your recovery.
