Many conditions, including sleep apnea, can be most easily detected by overnight observation. If you've been scheduled for a sleep study to check for sleeping disorders, there are several ways you can help the process go smoothly. Glacier Headache & Sleep Medicine in Kalispell, MT, requests you make the following preparations before your stay.

How to Prepare for a Sleeping Disorder Exam

1. No Caffeine

Sleeping DisorderYour doctor is looking for conditions that may be affecting your sleep. Restlessness due to caffeine triggers false results and makes it impossible to diagnose your condition. Avoid coffee, tea, and caffeinated soda after 2 p.m. On the day of your study.

2. No Hair Products & Makeup

Before your sleep study, wash your hair with shampoo only and don't use conditioner. Keep your hair free of styling products, and don't wear any makeup. This helps keep the facility and equipment clean.

3. Two-Piece Pajamas

To make your sleeping disorder tests easier, avoid one-piece pajamas for your visit. Sweatpants or shorts with a t-shirt are acceptable choices, as are pajama sets.

4. Get Comfortable

If you have a favorite pillow, bring it to the facility when you come for testing. You can also bring reading material to help keep yourself entertained during your stay. Don't bring electronics, as bright screens before bedtime can disrupt your sleep patterns.

5. Bring Medications

The facility will generally provide basic toiletries, but if you have more specific needs, such as medications, you'll have to bring them with you.

If you've been suffering from sleep problems, an overnight sleep study is often the fastest way to get to the root of the problem. If you have any other questions about the procedure, contact Glacier Headache & Sleep Medicine at (406) 752-1729 or through their website.
