5 Ways to Manage Lower Back Pain At Home, Lexington, North Carolina

If you’ve recently suffered an injury to your lower back, you may be wondering what you can do to make the pain more manageable. While visiting a chiropractor is always a viable option, there are also a few other simple solutions available to those who are suffering from back pain. If you are dealing with discomfort, the chiropractors from South Main Chiropractic in Lexington, NC, are here to help. Below, they offer a few methods for treating your back pain in the comfort of your home.

5 At-Home Treatments for Lower Back Pain

1. Rest

Most back injuries heal on their own within six weeks or so. Rather than rushing out for an MRI, steroid injections, or some other test or remedy, try to just give your back some time to heal on its own. However, if you are completely immobile, or your pain is debilitating, seek out professional care as soon as possible.

2. Try Anti-Inflammatories

back painAnti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen and naproxen can help you keep your pain in check as you rest your back. Always take these medications with food, and consult with your doctor if you’re taking them for more than 10 days.

3. Ice & Heat

In the first 24 to 48 hours following your injury, you need to ice your back. Although heat may feel better at the time, it can actually cause more inflammation, thus increasing your back pain down the line. For the best results, ice the affected area for about 20 minutes multiple times within the first day or two. After the first few days have passed, you can switch to heat.

4. Pay Attention to Your Feet

Your feet may play a role in how your back feels. If you have pronation, otherwise known as feet that roll inward as you walk, you are more susceptible to back pain. You may want to give some orthotic inserts a try to see if they alleviate any of your pain.

5. Go Mattress Shopping

A new mattress may sound like an expensive way to manage back pain, but it can make a world of difference. Not only can it alleviate aches and pains, but it can help you sleep better overall, giving you more energy to exercise, which can further strengthen your spine. If you suffer from lower back pain, look for a medium-firm mattress.

Of course, if you find that these at-home tips do not alleviate your lower back pain, you can always call on the chiropractors at South Main Chiropractic. They offer spinal adjustments, physical therapy, and more to address back, neck, and shoulder pain, as well as headaches, knee pain, and other chronic issues. Visit their website to learn more about their services, or give them a call at (336) 243-8000 to schedule an appointment.
