Is There Such a Thing as Too Much Exercise? The Kids' Gym Experts Weigh in, Manhattan, New York

It’s inevitable that parents are going to worry about their children’s exercise regime. But, while most parents are worried about their kids spending too much time remaining sedentary, there are concerned parents who want to know whether their kids are exercising too much. The kids’ activity experts at The Little Gym of The Upper East Side host one of the best kiddie playspaces in the city, as well as offering kids' camps, kids' gymnastics and family-friendly activities. These dedicated experts recommend following a few simple guidelines to help your child find the right balance:

  • Are They Getting Enough Rest?: If your child plays organized sports, the American Academy of Pediatrics says your child needs at least one day off a week. Practice is very tiring, particularly when kids are getting up early or practicing late. Not enough sleep is going to hinder performance, mood and academics. Make sure kids get a break from training for at least 2-3 months of the year.
  • Dramatic vs Gradual Increases in Physical Activity: Dramatic jumps in exercise are responsible for injuries, stress fractures and other problems. The slower the increase in activity, the better. This is because children’s bones are not as well equipped as adults’ to handle extensive activity. Make sure your child’s training routines are undertaken gradually with lots of time to warm up.
  • Children & Play: Are your children getting enough playtime? Playtime is vital to your child’s development, and while physical activity is great, competitive sports can burden children tremendously. Children who push themselves too hard can experience burnout. No one wants his or her child to go through that, so ensuring balance is paramount. If you’ve noticed drastic changes in you child’s attitude or weight, it might be time to talk to him or her about stress and balance. Remember, their childhood is a time for fun; when sports stop being fun, it might be time to stop.
