When Should You Schedule Lawn Fertilization & Treatments?, Enterprise, Alabama

Lawn fertilization and treatments help homeowners maintain lush, healthy yards. But sometimes, it seems these processes come with a lot of guesswork. Many people want to keep their grass as vibrant as possible throughout the spring, summer, and fall, but they aren’t quite sure of the best times to schedule services like fertilization and weed control treatments.

As with many aspects of lawn care, the answer to when you should fertilize depends on a few factors, such as grass type. For warm-season grasses like Zoysia Grass and Bahiagrass, it’s best to schedule lawn fertilization in the late spring or early summer. Most Alabama residents have warm-season grasses, but it’s possible you could also have transition zone grasses, such as Kentucky Bluegrass. The fertilizing schedule for these varieties may differ slightly from warm-season grasses, but it won’t likely be by much.

Fertilizing too early could actually throw your grass’ growth cycle off, especially if you’ve fertilized in the fall. Often, lawn care professionals will fertilize once in the spring, and then they will perform a follow-up fertilization if needed shortly after that. In the fall, the first lawn fertilization will be performed in late August or early September, with a follow-up application somewhere between late October and mid-November.

Lawn maintenance professionals can also schedule fertilizations to work with your weed control treatments. Lawn treatments such as weed control applications are typically best performed at least one week prior to fertilization. Because all types of grass behave slightly differently, however, it may be helpful to work with lawn care experts who will assist you in caring for your specific kind.
