Farsighted and nearsighted are both terms used to describe two different types of refractive eye conditions, or vision problems that limit the way the retina receives light. When the eye is not able to properly interpret light, it can affect vision, typically making objects blurry. In the simplest terms, nearsighted people can see things close by but have a harder time seeing objects that are further away. Farsighted individuals have the opposite problem, as they can see clear at a distance, but find nearby objects are blurry.

What Causes These Problems?

Generally, if you are nearsighted or farsighted, your eyeball’s shape makes it difficult to receive light correctly and send it to the right parts of the eye. For example, with nearsightedness, light comes through the cornea but is dispersed before hitting the retina, where it should go. As a result, the light needed to make out objects at a further distance is interrupted. With farsightedness, the eye’s shape causes light to be refracted beyond the retina, making it harder to see closer objects.

How Can You Correct Nearsighted & Farsighted Vision?

farsightedEyeglasses and contact lenses are the most common ways to correct these vision issues. However, to get corrective lenses to work, you’ll need to work with a trusted optometrist to get a prescription. Using a series of tests, your eye doctor will provide a set of numbers to represent how much help you need to see things far away or up close.

Depending on the circumstances of your vision, you may also be able to correct these problems through surgery. For example, laser eye surgery is commonly used to reshape the cornea and resolve nearsighted and farsighted issues, allowing you to see without glasses.
