When you place items into storage, you do so because you are hoping to use them again in the future. Unfortunately, many people over-pack their self-storage units and have difficulty finding what they’re looking for. To avoid this pitfall, pack and place your items in an organized and efficient manner.

Group Like Items Together

For example, if you are storing winter clothes, put all of your jackets in the same box or container as your sweaters and scarves. Likewise, any books or sporting equipment should be placed together. This will make it easier to get to everything you need.

Make Items as Compact as Possible

Storage offers limited space, so you want to maximize your unit as much as you can. Break down furniture before putting it inside, and try to pack items within each other. For example, place linens and sheets in a space saving bag, and put the bag in a suitcase or a container with clothing.

Keep a Running List

Make a list to help you stay organized as you pack. Number boxes and containers, and keep an itemized list of everything within each box. You can store the information in your phone or keep a hard copy if you prefer.

Photograph & Map Out Your Unit

In addition to maintaining an itemized list, photograph your belongings after you’ve placed them in storage and draw a map of the unit. This will make it easier to find items in a hurry as you’ll already know where they are located.

Label All Boxes & Containers

In black marker, write a general description of the items in each box along the top and side of the container. The labels don’t have to be complicated; writing something such as “books” or “sweaters” should suffice.
