There are a number of options for the patient who needs tooth crowns, but more recent innovations make this a much more manageable task. Where these crowns used to take two visits to complete—the first to make a mold of the teeth and figure out the exact dimensions of the crown needed, and the second to actually put it in place—a newer procedure, through the use of CEREC® crowns, allows everything to happen all in one visit.

Lowitz & Meier, a dentist office that has served greater Cincinnati for over 30 years, employs this technology as part of its commitment to providing the best, most patient, friendly family dentistry and oral surgery options.

So, how do CEREC® crowns work?

The first step involves using a special intraoral camera to take a high resolution digital picture of the area. This image is then rendered into a 3D model, which the dentist, in turn, uses to model the crown itself. In doing so, he or she makes sure to take into account antagonist teeth and the bite situation so that it will fit perfectly in its new home. Once this step is completed, an automated milling machine carves the actual color-matched crown out of a ceramic block, using special diamond-coated units. Given that this final stage only takes 6 to 15 minutes, what was once a more laborious process becomes incredibly streamlined and swift.

CEREC® crowns are the perfect option for the patient who has limited time or patience with dental visits. Who wouldn’t choose this more efficient and quicker method to smile restoration? Certainly Dr. Lowitz and Dr. Meier are more than happy to explain more about this fascinating, high-tech procedure to see if this is the right option for you.
