Chrome plating is an affordable and effective way to protect metal from corrosion. Although chrome itself does not rust, sometimes, prior exposure to moisture and air can lead the underlying metal to show signs of oxidation. When this happens, you may wonder if there is an easy way to remove the rust from chrome plating. Porter Guertin Co., the premier metal finishing company in Cincinnati, OH, reveals three effective ways to do so below.

3 Simple Ways to Remove Rust From Chrome Plating

1. The Chrome Polish Method

The first and most obvious way to remove rust from chrome plating is to apply a layer of chrome polish. First, clean the surface with water and mild detergent to remove debris and dirt. Apply chrome polish using a clean cloth until the rusted surface is completely coated; then, apply a dab of polish to a ball of fine steel wool (brass wool is even better), and gently rub the rusted surface in a circular pattern to remove the corrosion. Rinse the chrome plating clean, and look for any remaining rust spots. Repeat the process until the rust is gone.

2. The Aluminum Foil Method

chrome platingThe second method does away with expensive polishes and brass wool. It requires only aluminum foil and a solution of saltwater. Crumple up a sheet of aluminum foil, and dampen it. Rub this against the rusty surface gently to remove the corrosion. Keep the aluminum foil wet to prevent scratching. Rinse the surface occasionally, and inspect it for rust spots. Dry it with a clean cloth when rust is gone.

3. The Coca-Cola® Method

Coca-Cola contains phosphoric acid that will eat away at rust without damaging the underlying metal surface. Clean and dry the surface first, and then soak the rust in Coca-Cola for 15 minutes. Scrub it off with a sponge or dish scrubber. If you need something more abrasive, use a wad of aluminum foil. When you think the rust is gone, rinse and dry the chrome plating, and inspect to make sure.
