The high cost of going to a four-year college or university continues to spark debate around the United States. Obtaining a higher education does not have to cost your life savings thanks to the option of community colleges. Two-year schools provide numerous cost-effective benefits so you can broaden your mind without worrying about how to pay off huge debt.

3 Cost-Effective Reasons to Attend Community College

Lower Tuition Cost

community collegeCommunity colleges will always cost less than state and private four-year colleges and universities. They offer two-year associate degrees, one-year diplomas, and short-term certificate programs. Those who earn their associate degree have the option to transfer to a four-year school and earn their bachelor’s degree or use their current education level to focus on a trade or other profession requiring two years of college. If community college students decide to continue their education at a four-year school, they will have reduced their debt significantly.

Lower Housing Costs

Housing at many four-year schools is expensive. While Southeast Community College offers on-campus housing at its Beatrice and Milford campuses, many students choose to live at home to save money. Even if your parents decide to charge you rent, you likely will pay less than you would for an apartment or residence hall room. The money you save doing this can make it possible to rent an apartment, purchase a vehicle, or other things when you graduate.

Flexible Schedule

Many community colleges provide evening, nighttime, and weekend courses so you can work part- or even full-time. While some four-year students work, they do not get the flexible scheduling options their two-year counterparts enjoy. Most classes are during the day from Monday through Friday and leave little opportunity for work options other than work-study programs.
