If you’ve ever had your primary care physician give you a spinal adjustment in their office rather than referring you to a chiropractor, you may have wondered what the difference is between the two. While there are some similarities, there are several key differences patients should be aware of. Understanding these differences will help you determine whether you need to see your DO (doctor of osteopathic medicine) or a chiropractor.

Chiropractor vs. DO: What’s the Difference?

Education & Training

Both chiropractors and DOs spend a minimum of 10 years in school, and both must also pass intensive exams. Osteopathic doctors, however, are required to complete up to eight years of additional training through a residency, depending on their specialty. While not required, many chiropractors also have the choice to complete a residency. Because a DO’s scope of practice is much larger than that of a chiropractor, they require more extensive training.

Use of Medications

ChiropractorWhile an osteopathic doctor may take more natural and holistic treatment approaches to start, they can, and do, prescribe medications to address any number of ailments their patients are facing. Chiropractors, however, cannot prescribe medications. Instead, they use completely natural manipulation techniques to restore alignment to the spine and address problems like back pain, neck pain, headaches, and more.

Treatment Techniques

Both doctors can use manual manipulation to address complications with joints. A chiropractor, however, focuses solely on the spine, whereas a DO can address a wide range of other joints and complications. It is important to note that although spinal adjustments are the primary mode of treatment for a chiropractor, it does not mean they can only treat problems affecting the spine. Misalignment in the spine can manifest itself in more ways than just back pain, and a proper adjustment can alleviate pain and restore function in many affected areas.
