According to the National Cancer Institute, about 40% of the people in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer at some point their lives. For this reason alone, knowing the cures and treatments for cancer is extremely important. Talking about the cures and treatments for cancer, the ability of cannabis to alleviate cancer symptoms is well documented. In spite of this, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) continues to categorize cannabis as a Schedule I drug. In case you didn’t know it already, a Schedule I drug is a drug with no known medical use and a high potential for abuse.

As it is a Schedule I drug, cannabis cannot legally be sold, possessed or prescribed under U.S law. This is quite sad considering that cannabis relieves a variety of conditions and symptoms including cancer. So, how can cannabis cure cancer? Let’s take a look.

Before we discuss how cannabis can cure cancer, it’s important to take a look at how cannabis relieves the symptoms associated with the disease. According to a number of studies on smoked cannabis, cannabis can help treat the vomiting and nausea caused by cancer chemotherapy. Moreover, it was found that inhaling cannabis can help to relieve the neuropathic pain associated with brain tumor.

In addition to the above, recent research on animals shows that THC and CBD, two compounds or cannabinoids present in cannabis, can slow the growth of, or even kill certain types of cancer cells. Research on the ability of cannabinoids to treat cancer in humans is ongoing. While there is no conclusive evidence that cannabinoids cure cancer in humans, there is significant research that gives ‘solid proof’ that cannabinoids have the ability to cure cancer in humans.

According to the National Cancer Institute, cannabinoids can block cell growth or cause cell death to inhibit the growth of tumor. Moreover, they can block the blood vessels that tumors require to grow. Also, lab tests and studies on animals show that cannabinoids have the ability to kill cancer cells while protecting the normal cells.

According to a study on delta -9-THC, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can damage or kill the cancer cells. Moreover, the study shows that THC can cause anti-tumor effects. Another study on the effectiveness of cannabidiol (CBD) in treating breast cancer shows that CBD can cause cancer cell death without affecting normal breast cells. According to the study, CBD can minimize the number, growth, and spread of tumors. Other studies reveal that cannabidiol can increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy to kill cancer cells without causing any harm to the normal cells. Also, when delta -9-THC and CBD are combined together, they can make chemotherapy extremely effective.

Before you come to any conclusion, you must consider that the aforementioned findings were of studies done on animals. The trials of cannabis use for cancer treatment in humans are yet to be published. Nevertheless, a number of studies published at different times reveal how cannabis may cure the different types of cancer in humans.

According to a study by the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Madrid’s Complutense University, cannabinoids present in cannabis such as THC have the ability to inhibit the growth of brain tumor. Another study published in the American Journal of Cancer reveals that the administration of cannabinoid helps to minimize the growth of tumor cells and inhibit the spread of pancreatic tumor cells.

More studies on the matter show that THC treats liver cancer by reducing the growth of cancer cells and minimizing the human HCC cell lines viability and that THC can help to control the growth of certain lung cancers.

As of now, Cannabis is a Schedule I drug which means that you cannot legally sell, possess, or prescribe Cannabis in the United States. However, this is a stance that States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will have to soften sooner rather than later. The reason for this is simple: research proves that the compounds found in cannabis have the ability to treat a variety of ailments including cancer. Finally, to answer the original question, yes, cannabis can cure cancer!
