When you’re beginning a construction or redesign project, be it commercial, industrial, or residential, you’re going to need a fair amount of building materials. One item you might need is sand. Although you may think you can simply order sand and be done with it, there are a variety of types to choose from that are used for different purposes.

Topsoil Sand

Topsoil sand is often dark brown or even black in color because it is full of nutrients. This top layer of earth is ideal for gardening or landscaping projects. In addition to being the perfect home for crops, fields, or gardens, topsoil drains better than many other types of sand. Place topsoil on areas of your property where water collects for improved drainage.

Washed Sand

Washed sand is cleaned to remove fine pieces of clay and silt. Washed sand is most often used as a top layer for projects, like golf course sand pits, or a base for laying tile and bricks during a landscaping project.

Fill Sand

sandUnderneath the top layer of earth, you’ll find fill dirt. This type of sand does not hold any nutrients, but it is instead made up of broken down bits of clay and rock. Because of its tough composition, fill sand is often used to set a foundation or to create a stable layer on a property. Fill sand is used to level out unsmooth land by filling in holes. Then, grass or turf may be added on top for more visual appeal.

Concrete Sand

Concrete sand is often a mixture of large, tough materials such as granite or limestone. Concrete sand is processed so no large pieces of rock are left in the finished product. This mixture is often used to make cement or pour asphalt.
