The septic tank revolutionized modern plumbing and plays a valuable role in our everyday lives. This equipment keeps homes cleaner and safer by removing and treating solid and liquid waste, so clean water can be released back into the soil. While the septic tank may seem like a recent invention, it has been used for over 150 years—and over the years, these systems have traveled the world and become more advanced.

The Beginnings of the Septic Tank System

The earliest use of the septic tank is traced back to France in 1860, John Mouras designed a prototype of the system for his home, eliminating the need for a chamber pot and outhouse. He built a tank from concrete and attached clay pipes to channel waste from his home to his yard. After about 10 years of use, Mouras dismantled the tank and was astonished to find that instead of being full, as he expected, there was only an organic liquid scum layer. He approached scientist Abbe Moigno about his discovery to determine how it could be improved and used in other settings.

In 1881, Mouras applied for a patent and formally created the system. News of the patent reached Great Britain and spread quickly, thanks to the Royal Navy. By 1883, septic tank usage reached the United States.

The Modern Septic System

septic tank Dalton GASince Mouras’ patent was approved, septic system use has expanded, and the equipment can now be found all over the world.

In the last 150 years, the septic tank has changed for the better, using drain fields to dispose of treated wastewater and a pumping system to remove the sludge for safe disposal. Modern septic tanks allow you to dispose of household waste safely. As long as you maintain the system and take advantage of today’s septic pumping technology, you never need to worry about handling waste yourself.
