Often recognized by the idiosyncratic face mask and acetylene torch, a welder’s job is to fuse metal parts together by heating them up to their melting points, and then hammering the pieces together. Welding work is an important aspect of numerous applications, such as auto body repair and demolition, and encompasses many different categories.

Arc Welding

There are three types of arc welding: shielded metal, gas metal, and gas tungsten. The “arc” refers to an electrical arc, which is used to heat up metal joints and filler material (or the welding rod) and has a sparky appearance. This method requires a grounding wire and an electrode lead, which are attached to the welding material. The electrode lead conducts an electric current and generates an arc of electricity as it’s moved away from the welding material. This arc is what melts the metal and requires a steady hand to manipulate properly.

Torch Welding

One of the most popular and recognizable types of welding work features an oxyacetylene torch, which is used to melt metal joints and the welding rod. This method is often used for auto body repair, heavy equipment maintenance, and making sculptures.

Explosion Welding

welding workThis unique welding technique was developed by NASA in the 1980s to repair nuclear reactor parts and build structures in space. To join two metal parts, chemical explosives are used to accelerate one of the parts toward the other at such a high velocity that the impact causes them to bond — a process also known as solid phase bonding. This method allows metals with different melting points to be fused, which is nearly impossible to achieve with conventional welding methods.

Many Honolulu residents who need welding work look to Contractors’ Equipment & Service Corp. to get the job done safely and properly. To make an inquiry about their services, give them a call at (808) 676-7566. More information about their services and locations is available on their website.
