A person’s choice of artwork, like their selection of movies, says a lot about their personality, tastes, and interests. That’s why finding a vintage poster of your favorite movie is such a special occasion. How can you display your poster for the world to see? The team at Queen Street Gallery in Martinsburg, WV, has a few suggestions.

3 Ways to Display Vintage Movie Posters

1. Frame Them

vintage postersThe right frame can make any piece of art look more important and sophisticated. Because most movie posters are so large, you probably won’t want to cover it with glass. Instead, opt for a simple, chic metal frame. Mounting is also optional, though if you decide to do this, avoid dry mounting. Dry mounting significantly decreases the value of vintage posters and antique prints because it permanently attaches the piece to its mounting surface. For highly valuable pieces, use a linen backing and non-permanent, acid-free mounting.

2. Consider Size

A single small poster will look out of place on a vast stretch of wall, regardless of how nicely it’s framed. If you have several small posters, group them together gallery-style. You can also pair your movie posters with complementary artworks. For example, a poster for “The Phantom of the Opera” would look striking next to a framed piece of sheet music and a framed antique print of a rose. Oversized posters, on the other hand, may work well alone on a wall. A good rule of thumb is to ensure the single poster takes up at least two-thirds of the wall on which it’s hung.

3. Prop Them Up

Framed vintage posters can look excellent propped against a wall. Depending on the size, you can prop it against a wall on the floor, or set it on top of the fireplace mantle or a bookshelf. A vintage poster of “Streetcar Named Desire” could look lovely on top of an antique trunk, while one for “Casablanca” could look excellent on the mantelpiece along with some Moroccan artwork or sculptures.
