One question that many artists have on their minds is how often they should be updating their portfolios. The short answer is that you should have new content to share at least a few times per week. Whether you’re a graphic designer, illustrator, or fine artist, an updated portfolio and social media presence will help you find new clients and further your career. You might prefer breaking out the fine art supplies and making art rather than putting it online, but it’s worth it in the long run.

Updating Your Portfolio

Your portfolio website should only showcase your very best work—but just as importantly, it should be recent. Clients are always more interested in what you’re currently capable of producing. Ideally, you should be adding new work to your portfolio once every week or two. If you are particularly proud of older pieces, you can always create a special page for those. That way, clients can see both your most recent work and your personal favorites.

In addition to updating your formal portfolio, maintaining an active online presence is also an essential way to further your career. Every time you complete a new art piece, share it on your professional social media hubs. If it was commissioned by a client, ask their permission (and they’ll probably say “yes”). If you don’t have much new work to show, you can always write a blog post; some artists even document the stages of a work-in-progress. Whatever you share online, consistently producing content will show future clients that you’re actively involved in your craft. You may even gain fans who look forward to what you post next!
