Making the decision to buy a boat is a big deal. Once you’ve finally landed on a make and model, you’re ready to enjoy your new boat out on the water! But, where will you keep your craft when it’s not in use?

Petzold’s Marine Center in Portland and Norwalk, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, shared these tips for what to consider when choosing between dry docking, marina and trailering boat storage:

1. Cost

After you buy a boat, think about how much money you’re willing to spend on storing your vessel. Marinas are typically the most expensive option, followed by dry docking. Trailering your boat at home costs nothing but driveway or garage space.

2. Frequency of Use

Are you planning to go out boating every weekend this summer? If so, you’ll need your boat storage to be close to your home and easily accessible. Keep in mind that dry storage facilities often require 24-hours notice before you can get your boat off the rack.

3. Locations of Use

buy a boatIf you often put your boat in at a nearby easement or move from one lake to another, trailering is a great storage idea. When the urge to go fishing strikes just hook up your hitch and hit the road. Boat owners who prefer a specific lake will benefit from marina storage. If your boat isn’t in working condition, consider taking it to dry storage. There, you don’t have to worry about potential further damage, and you can perform repairs if you have the know-how.

4. Security

If you buy a boat from a dealer, you’ll likely notice the safety precautions around the property to prevent theft and damage. Marinas and dry storage locales typically provide similar around-the-clock security through patrols and cameras. You can rest assured that your boat will be under good care at these facilities. Boat owners who trailer their vessels should consider using a hitch lock to prevent it from being stolen. You can also park a vehicle directly in front of the trailer to reduce the chances of theft by minimizing room to back up to the hitch.
