As the weather warms and the days grow longer, you're probably looking forward to swimming, barbecues and, of course, the Fourth of July. While personal fireworks displays are not permitted within Lake St. Louis' city limits, there are other places in the state where they're essentially unrestricted. If you're planning to set off fireworks this summer, make sure to follow these basic safety tips to reduce the risk of personal injury.

Preventing Personal Injury During Firework Displays

1. Store Fireworks Properly

Keep your fireworks in a dry, sealed container away from combustible materials. Don't expose them to excessive heat or a spark. Not only will this prevent any accidents, but carefully storing fireworks will help prevent any damage that might cause them not to work.

2. Read the Instructions

Each type of firework has directions for operation, which you should read beforehand and follow carefully. Fireworks are safe when used as intended—but if misused, they can cause personal injury or death, and the manufacturer will not be legally responsible.

personal injury3. Use a Clear & Level Area

Make sure there is nothing delicate or flammable in the area where you intend to launch your fireworks. A road or large driveway works well. Clear away any debris and make sure you have a stable surface from which to launch.

4. Stay Back

The only person who should go near the fireworks is the person lighting them. Light one at a time and move away in case of misfires. If a firework doesn't go off properly, don't go back to investigate it and never try to relight it. Instead, wait 20 minutes in case it does go off, then douse it with water.

5. Keep Water On Hand

You should have a full bucket or a hose ready to spray in case of accidental fires or misdirected fireworks. Use your water on dud fireworks as well as on burnt out fireworks, just to be safe.

As long as you treat them with appropriate caution, fireworks can be a great addition to summer festivities. Obey your local fire ordinances, follow the directions on the package, and have fun!
