If you’ve opted for cremation for a loved one, you might expect this decision to replace most other aspects of funeral planning. However, this is not always the case. When you choose cremation, you have the opportunity to arrange and personalize many aspects of the process.

Below are some of the major decisions you'll need to make when planning a cremation and funeral for the deceased.

Funerals and Memorial Services

Choosing cremation won't prevent you from having a traditional funeral if you'd like one. A viewing, a funeral service, or both can be held as usual before the final disposition—or, if you prefer, you can forego a traditional funeral and have the remains cremated immediately. You may also opt for a memorial service months later, giving family and friends the opportunity to gather.

While there are limitations on the types of caskets which can be cremated, any fully flammable design is appropriate. You may also opt to forego a casket, in which case, the remains will be cremated in a temporary wooden or cardboard container. If you are holding a viewing or funeral, the remains may be displayed in the flammable casket, or in a rented casket which will not be cremated.

Memorialization

After cremation, there are several options for your loved one's ashes. They may be scattered in a location which would be meaningful to the deceased, or kept in an urn in your home. They can also be preserved in a columbarium or mausoleum, or you could choose a common grave or in a custom memorial. In addition to these traditional choices, some families opt to have their loved one's ashes preserved as synthetic gemstones, launched into space, incorporated into fireworks, placed in a coral reef, or included in glass artwork. There are many specialty services available which you may find fitting for your loved one's remains.

The disposition of your loved one's remains is a highly personal choice and one which can be difficult. If you need help with these decisions, talk to your funeral director concerning your options.
