May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and it's a perfect time to refresh yourself on some motorcycle safety tips. Accidents involving motorcycles account for an astounding 13 percent of all motor vehicle deaths in the United States in 2015, and that number continues to grow. The auto accident lawyers of Coyne, Cundiff & Hillemann, P.C., serve clients throughout the Lake St. Louis, Missouri, region and below, they share three safety tips for operating a motorcycle.

3 Motorcycle Safety Tips

auto accident1. Wear a Helmet

Missouri has a universal helmet law, which means all motorcycle riders of any age are required to wear helmets. This makes sense when you know helmets reduce the risk of death in an accident by as much as 37 percent. Whether you're taking your bike across the street or the country, make sure you have on your DOT-approved helmet.

2. Be a Defensive Driver

The sad fact is many automobile drivers simply do not see motorcycles. This means that you, as a motorcyclist, have to be on the defense every time you get on your bike. Be vigilant at all times, pass other vehicles with great care and caution, and follow all road rules and signage. Also, wear bright clothes and keep your lights on.

3. Don't Ride Tired

Getting on your bike without sufficient rest can be lethal. You know your body and what is a comfortable length of time to ride. In general, aim to rest every 75 to 125 miles. Never overexert yourself, and don’t demand more than your body is willing to give; it could mean the difference between life and death.
